Being the early adopter that I am, I picked up an iPhone about 2 months ago. I've been far happier with this phone than my old mobile, a craptastic Sony Ericsson. I am a little surprised however that Apple provided no way to back up or archive SMS messages sent and received with this device. After poking around on the internets, I found Syphone by Micromat: it is a simple utility to back up and archive SMS messages.
I did run into a slight problem at first: I couldn't see any of my messages when I opened Syphone. Eventually I found the solution in the forums. I wound up having to disable "Run in background" in the Syphone preferences and restarting the application.
